In 2008, issuance of the few remaining local domestic cards for cash withdrawal ceased. The number of Latvian payment cards reached 2.43 million in 2010, slightly down on 2009.
Total bank cards issued are equivalent to 1.04 per capita; 80.2% of bank cards are debit cards.
Credit and delayed debit card payments rose steeply from 2005 to 2008 before dipping in 2009 and in 2010.
As in other Baltic states, the domestic banking market is dominated by the Swedish banks, SEB and Swedbank. Both phased out their local bank brands during 2008-9. |
