In 2008, issuance of the few remaining local domestic cards for cash withdrawal ceased. The number of internationally-branded Latvian payment cards increased to 2.5 million, equivalent to 1.1 per capita; 76% of cards are debit cards. Credit and delayed debit card payments more than doubled.
As in other Baltic states, the domestic banking market is dominated by the Swedish banks, SEB and Swedbank. Both phased out their local bank brands during 2008-9. |
