About 70% of banking sector assets are held by the two biggest banks, both of which are state-controlled, with majority-foreign-owned banks accounting for 25%.
Priorbank, owned by Raiffeisen International, is the biggest western-owned bank, and several Russian banks are present.
Cards issued reached 0.98 per capita in 2010, up from 0.63 in 2008. Debit cards predominate, and the BelKart scheme is growing fast. Only about 5% of cards issued are credit/charge cards.
Other than card payments, there are few electronic retail payments, but internet and mobile banking is spreading rapidly. |
