Market Structure

Debit cards dominate the market, accounting for more than 88% of card payments in 2011. Credit card use is under-developed.

From 2011, most Belgian banks restricted the use of the Maestro function on BC/MC cards to the Europe region (geo-blocking).

KBC has developed a substantial retail banking network in the CEE region; KBC ’ divestments in 2011 and 2012.

Dexia Bank Belgium is now state-owned and was rebranded as Belfius Bank; its retail network (e. g. Turkey) has been sold.
