CroatiaÕs banking sector went through various crises in the late 1990s. All the major banks are now owned by western banks and foreign ownership exceeds 90% of total banking sector assets. The payment card market reached 8 million cards at end-2008, equivalent to 1.8 cards per capita, one of the highest levels in CEE markets.
Croatia is a showcase market for American Express through its agreement with PBZ, which has issued over 500,000 Amex cards. Erste Bank took over the rival Diners Club Adriatic in January 2007. |
