Market Overview

 
Payment Organization PBS (Payment Business Systems) announced a merger with BBS of Norway in 2007 to form Nets. This was scaled back to an acquirer processing joint venture, but was revived in 2009-10 as a merger between PBS and Nordito, the Norwegian holding company which owns BBS and Teller (see also Norway profile).
   
Domestic Card Brand Dankort debit cards, co-badged VISA for international use.
   
Market Structure

Debit cards are popular, with high levels of usage. There were 157 Dankort card payments per capita in 2010 (2009: 150).

PBS acquires Dankort cards while Teller acquires international cards. Banks were prohibited by law from charging merchant fees for debit card acceptance, but this changed in January 2005.
