Kazakhstan Market Structure

Though several banks issue proprietary domestic debit cards, nearly all cards are internationally-branded. Visa predominates, with market share close to 82.5%. Central bank figures show that only 47% of cards issued are classed as active.   The four largest banks - Kazkommertsbank, BTA Bank, Halyk Bank and Bank CenterCredit - accounted for 55.4% of banking sector assets as at July 2012. The first three of these needed government support as a result of the credit crunch.   Of the top 10 banks, ATF and Kaspi are foreign-controlled, by UniCredit and Baring Vostock respectively, while Kookmin Bank of Korea is the biggest shareholder in Bank CenterCredit. From Russia, Sberbank and VTB are keen to expand.
