Market Structure

The market has expanded rapidly during recent years. The number of bank cards issued grew from 214,000 at end-1999 to 4.2 million by end-2008, equivalent to 1.2 per capita. The number of POS terminals nearly doubled between 2006 and 2008.

Debit cards dominate, accounting for almost 90% of cards at end-2008. Almost all are international cards.

As in other Baltic states, the Swedish banks SEB and Swedbank are key players in the Latvian market.

Bankas Snoras launched instant consumer loans and instant revolving MasterCard credit cards across its network in March 2008.
