Market Structure

The market is dominated by debit cards, with 1.8 billion payments in 2008. PIN debit cards are Maestro-branded for international use. Visa is a delayed debit/credit brand, though V Pay issuance is likely in future. Despite programmes by the main banks, credit card use remains low.

Following restructuring, payment products are managed by Currence and transaction processing by Equens, successor to Interpay.

Consumer Finance Levels of borrowing per person are below eurozone and EU averages. Santander, Sofinco and LaSer Cofinoga are all present in the Dutch market.
