Most cards are issued under Ôpayroll schemesÕ and are primarily used for cash acquisition. Growth in credit card issuance, though curtailed by the financial crisis, is resuming as confidence returns.
Sberbank, the Savings Bank of the Russian Federation, dominates the retail banking market, followed by VTB; both are state-controlled. Alfa-Bank is the biggest private bank.
SociŽtŽ GŽnŽrale (Rosbank), UniCredit, Raiffeisen and have the biggest western-owned networks. Several western banks, including Barclays, HSBC and Santander have pulled out of retail banking. |
