Russia Market Structure

Total card numbers approached 200 million during 2011, a rise of 38.6% on 2010.   Most cards are issued under ‘payroll schemes’ and are primarily used for cash acquisition, though POS payments are growing rapidly off a low base. Credit card issuance is also increasing.   Sberbank, the Savings Bank of the Russian Federation, dominates the retail banking market, followed by VTB; both are state-controlled. Alfa-Bank is the biggest private bank.   Société Générale (Rosbank), UniCredit and Raiffeisen have the biggest western-owned networks. Several western banks, including Barclays, HSBC and Santander have pulled out of retail banking.
