Market Structure

Like other CEE markets, Slovakia has grown rapidly during recent years. By end-2008, the number of cards had reached 5.3 million.

As in other CEE markets, most cards are debit cards and are mainly used for cash withdrawals, though POS use is growing strongly.

SLSP (Slovenska sporitelna), VUB and Tatra banka, the three largest banks, are owned respectively by Erste, Intesa Sanpaolo and Raiffeisen.

Consumer Finance Borrowing is low by CEE standards with credit card and other consumer loans totalling only Û1.9 billion at end-2008.
