Market Structure

The market has a complex structure, with three domestic payment system networks.

The POS and ATM acceptance infrastructure is one of the most extensive in Europe. The number of cards in issue has grown strongly, to 76 million by end-2008, with debit and delayed debit cards in the majority and little revolving credit. Card use at the POS has increased rapidly in recent years.

Consumer Finance Until 2007, Spain was one of the fastest-growing consumer finance markets in western Europe. However, outstanding loans fell marginally during 2008 to Û102.3bn by year-end.
