Market Structure

There were 104 million debit and credit cards by end-2008. Debit cards, accounting for just under 60% of cards in issue, are mainly used for ATM access. Credit cards are used for purchases; cash advances on credit cards are a feature of the market.

Several Turkish banks have formed strategic links with foreign groups, including GE, Citigroup, UniCredit, ING and HSBC.

   
Major Issuers Yapi Kredi, Garanti, Isbank and Akbank.
   
Consumer Lending According to TCMB, the central bank, credit card balances incurring interest charges rose to YTL 11.6 billion in 2008 from YTL 8.1 billion in 2007, accounting for nearly 30% of total household borrowing.
